Taking kids to and from school every day can be tiring. What do you do to pass the time? With three drop-offs, I have a few routines, but lately, I've found it better to be fully present with whatever I'm doing. Are you paying attention? Are you multitasking? Stop! Don't split your focus; instead, concentrate on the moment and the people around you. The mornings pass so quickly on the bus that it can take up to three hours to get around. I used to let my little one sleep while I finished getting ready for work during the commute. Looking out the window at the end of the ride, just before getting on BART or transferring to another bus, provides a peaceful moment in the city. Though my routine has changed, my route and children are still with me. This morning's drop-offs feel overwhelming since going to three places for one person stretches my imagination and makes me feel like I'm floating in traffic. I find myself zoning out, reflecting on what we have planned for the day, observing the people moving in traffic, appreciating the landscape, and thinking about our weekend. I ask my kids about their hopes for the day, what exciting things they expect, or we might even sing a song together. I love to hear what they are doing in their world; they have such busy schedules and circles of friends. Morning drop offs are our time to do this, and I intentionally use this time to be present. No matter how hectic it gets or how long the journey takes, we still have to get there together.
