Back to school and back to school basics don’t really change, only our views on them. What are your back-to-school essentials for you and the kids? This year, I have regulars like clothing and accessories. Still, I am adding some essentials that I want you to consider also. Every year, we go through the same routine of waking up, eating breakfast, and getting ready for school, but what does that really mean? How are you getting ready and taking care of yourself and your family? For me and mine, we are doing daily check-ins and this year a dose of mental health checks too for the transitions that are happening from kindergarten to 1st grade, from 1st day at middle school to last year, and the final, most crucial senior year for my oldest.
Self-Care is about what works for you and is defined by you. I am taking care of myself and others this year as essential back-to-school must-haves, and no, Nikes are not included, but instead I am adding self-care for everyone. I cannot tell you how significant the value of self-care is in taking care of ourselves, others, and controlling our emotions. It also helps us get into what makes us unique and the best of what we offer our spirit souls, the non-physical essence of a person - you. Yes, through spirituality, you have a spirit soul, allowing you to see deeper into the reasoning behind your destiny. What are you going to do with yourself? There is a bigger picture this year- Don’t forget it. Working on ourselves in many facets allows us to grow and gain deeper awareness of issues around us and heightened needs for maturity and peace. Be calm and take that free time to invest in yourself and do things that make you happy.
Sleep is not for the meek or weak, and this year catching those z’s matters. . . . . . repair and regenerate. Sleep allows us to rest, reset, and tap into our unconscious, discovering new things uninhibited. It also allows us to learn new things, respond better to stress, and restore energy levels so we can manage ourselves, our households, and our personal health.
Organization is on the list but think of it as how you spend your time and make sure it is wise. Take a morning walk, attend the school field trip, and don’t forget to say no and not be overcommitted to things you do not want to do.
Most importantly, this back-to-school year, remember to hug your kids, say I love you encourage them to speak their mind, and breathe.
